Theorical and practical class on image analysis

Logo UPS(Faculté Sciences Orsay) + UPC

Coordinators

Frederic Coquelle / Jean-Denis Faure; Sophie Piquerez

Goals

-Describe and explain the principles and methods of microscopy and image analysis, the specificities of plant cell architecture, compartmentalization and dynamics

- Use dedicated plant cell biology approaches (cellular phenotyping, spatio-temporal detection of biological molecules, protein interactions in vivo).

- Propose and collectively implement an experimental approach and to answer a biological question.

- Collect, analyze, synthetize and present experimental results obtained from practical class.

- Organize collectivally in order to manage laboratory experiments in a dedicated time.

- Contribute to a research project by being part of a team while demonstrating autonomy and initiative.

Skills

- Understand a research context,

- Define a biological question associated the research context,

- Design experimental procedures to ansewer the biological questions,

- Carry out the experiments, collect the data and analyze them,

- Present and interpret the data in a sceintific format (Figure with legends and oral presentation),

- Collaborate with his pair and the class to achieve,

- Interact with technical staff to carry out the experiment

Content

Theorical and practical class on image analysis including AI tools (3 sessions) - Experimental design and preparation (1 session) - Experimental implementation including (live confocal imaging, GUS staining, immunolocalisation, etc.) (6 sessions)

Format

The class is a "project-based" course with 1 scientific question - 1 experimental approach dedicated to plant cell biology and imaging. The objective is to learn how to critically analyse data obtained from different cytological and imaging techniques through a practical class and a mini-internship in a research team.

Special teaching methods

The module is organized free operating practical project. Students are given biological materials (plants) and protocols to use at the beginning of the course. They have to define a biological question associated with these materials, design experiments and finally interpret the obtained data to provide an answer to the biological questions. Students will operate as paiurs and will be mentored druing the entire course. They will have acess to IJPB cell biology and imaging platform with staff to carry out experiments on the research grade equipment.
